Configuration Blog Series - Folder Structure Changes

$

0

In the previous blog, you learned the terminology changes between V8i and CONNECT. Now let us see the folder structure changes.

Installation Directory

As the CONNECT Edition release of MicroStation is a 64 bit application, it is by default installed in C:\Program Files\ directory, as against the C:\Program Files (x86)\ directory. You can change this location while installing the application.

Configuration Directory

The WorkSpace directory, that previously contained all the standards, examples, and project data is now renamed as Configuration. Some more changes are done to it. The following graphic will show you the difference between the old and new directory structure.

The Interface folder is removed. The function key, button assignments, and stuff that used to be in this folder is now defined in DGNLibs.

The Systems folder is now moved within the Default folder in the MicroStation’s program directory (C:\Program Files\Bentley\MicroStation CONNECT Edition\MicroStation\Default\)

The WorkSpaces folder can contain one or more WorkSpaces. Each WorkSpace in turn can contain one or more WorkSets. A sample WorkSpace called "Example" containing a WorkSet "MetroStation" is delivered with MicroStation. The MetroStation project is a complete multi-disciplinary project of an underground rail station. It also contains various sample files and videos that highlight the new features of the MicroStation CONNECT Edition.

The Users folder is removed as each user has its own personal .ucf and .upf file which is not affected by selection of other Configuration components.

Standards

Standards can be now maintained with more granularity:

  • In the Organization folder, you will keep DGN libraries, seeds, etc. that will be used for all your WorkSpaces and WorkSets. In short, they will be Organization-wide.
  • For library files specific to a WorkSpace, you have individual Standards folder within each WorkSpace.
  • Similarly, library files specific to a WorkSet, you have individual Standards folder within each WorkSet.

Defining Custom Configuration

In CONNECT, the default location of the Configuration directory is C:\Program Data\Bentley\MicroStation CONNECT Edition\Configuration. However, in real world, most of the user project data and standards are at server locations. You can define the location of configuration to such location from the installer wizard itself.

The above image shows the Configuration page of the installer. In it, select the second radio button Custom Configuration (plus Delivered Configuration). It will display the field for selection of Custom Configuration. Click the Browse button next to it and select the network configuration location.

In the next blog, we will talk about the Configuration Level changes in CONNECT.

gINT is Alive and Growing!

Let’s talk gINT and growth. In short where have we been and where are we going.

Where we’ve been

gINT was founded in 1985 to provide centralized data management and reporting for geotechnical subsurface projects of all types. The software automates many repetitive tasks, eliminates redundant data entry, and dramatically increases productivity.  Over time it has changed from a DOS to ACCESS base, adding SQL server.  And even though gINT is 34 years young, it’s still a workhorse of a database management system with a powerful reporting engine.

As technology and workflows advance and continue to do so at rapid pace. gINT is staying in step so geoprofessionals can continue to easily communicate and collaborate with other civil professionals. In 2016 Bentley released gINT Civil Tools. This sister product has added 3D visualization and analysis and is the first member of what will be an expanding gINT family of applications, bridging the gap for geoprofessionals to enable the BIM workflow.

Where we’re going

Looking forward, we will be moving gINT from a desktop application to an enterprise application with the addition of cloud based modules. The first module will be announced at our upcoming Year In Infrastructure (YII) event this fall.

Configuration Blog Series - Terminology Changes

$

There have been some changes in the terminologies used in CONNECT versus the previous versions of MicroStation. Let us look at them.

WorkSpace is now Configuration

What was previously called as WorkSpace is now called Configuration. The root folder containing MicroStation related content is now called Configuration, instead of Workspace. In CONNECT, WorkSpace is part of the Configuration and you can have one or more WorkSpaces. The label “WorkSpace” can be renamed.

The above diagram will give you a brief idea of the high-level changes. There are more details to the folder structure and contents that will be described in the next blog.

Project is now WorkSet

In V8i, grouping of files and associated data was referred to as projects. This term has been problematic as MicroStation users use the term Project for business purposes. This confusion has been removed by replacing Project with WorkSet.

User means a real User

In V8i, User field pointed to the UCF file, which contained your function key menus, button assignments etc. Now the User in CONNECT means actually a user who is signed into with his Bentley user account.

Standards is now Organization

The organization-wide standards that previously was the Standards folder within WorkSpace is now called Organization in the Configuration directory. You can have different sets of standards at various levels such as Organization-level, WorkSpace-level, and WorkSet-level.

"Site" and "Project" Configuration Levels Renamed

The “Site” and “Project” Configuration levels have been renamed to “Organization” and “WorkSet”. Two more Configuration levels have been added in CONNECT, viz, “WorkSpace” and “Role”. We’ll learn more about them in later blogs.

In the next blog, we will have a look at the folder structure changes in CONNECT.

Navigator CONNECT Beta now available

Our development team has been hard at work over the past few months to implement a new display engine which we believe will dramatically improve the performance while navigating through out your model and reduce the geometry drop out issues some of you have experienced with large complex data sets. This new technology is based on our Navigator Web app that we have been working on and plan to release in the near future. We have now made this technology available in our desktop and mobile app which provides smooth, fast, uninterrupted display but still allow you to view the model while offline unlike the Web app.

Since this is a significant change to one of our core functions of Navigator we want to make sure there are no issues before we make this available as part of our next update. With that in mind we would like to offer you the ability to participate in our technology preview and test this new functionality so that we can work out all the kinks before we release the update. This version of Navigator will not install over your current version of Navigator CONNECT to ensure we do not cause any disruption to your use of Navigator CONNECT as part of your current production work. Once you install the application you can open any 1.6 version iModel that you currently use in Navigator CONNECT Update 4 and beyond. You will notice an upgrade message when we open the file which is needed to support the new display engine. This will not effect your ability to open these .imodels in your current version of Navigator.

We have purposely disabled several features as we only want to test the navigation performance and ensure that your models still display properly. If you have any problems or feedback during your testing you will find a feedback menu entry in our backstage menu. This will send an email to our NavigatorBeta@bentley.com email address which we created to capture feedback for this technology preview. Please note that for the technology preview only a windows desktop version of Navigator is available.
