Air pollution contributes to health issues such as increased rates of
cancer and asthma. A recent study completed by the Bay Area Air
Quality Management District (BAAQMD) in West Oakland found that
neighborhoods such as Third Street and Seventh Street had air
pollution and cancer rates consistently higher than other
neighborhoods. Unfortunately, this health disparity is common in
many cities across the Unites States.
ADDRESSING HEALTH DISPARITIES
With the help of Streetlytics the BAAQMD, in partnership with local
environmental justice entities, community members, and industry
representatives, developed a refined emissions model to better
understand the relationship between emissions sources and
neighborhood health disparity.
This understanding empowered the BAAQMD to develop targeted
mitigation strategies that address the health disparity down to a
local neighborhood level.
